[Ms Neutopia and the term "hivemind"]

She didn't introduce the term to Usenet, as a cursory glance in the
   Groups Google archive reveals.

   > The term "HiveMind", of whosever coinage or usage, can only mean a
   > group of people who cannot think for themselves *and by definition
   > don't know it*. In any other construction the term is pointless.

I don't agree. The term's definition only prevents a hive mind from
being aware of what it is if you include that requirement in the
definition. More generally, the requirements are strong conformity and
groupthink (with telepathic communication and an "overmind" being
optional). This doesn't make the term pointless, far from it.

If there's one thing I know about skiffy based on watching it on TV,
it's that any self-respecting hive mind likes to argue, using the
mouth of one of its more photogenic parts, that its conformist ways
are superior to the jut-jawed hero's individualist mindset. If parts
of a hive mind can't know about their own condition, they can hardly
cause dismay to ruggedly handsome space cadets by making speeches
about the joys of collectivism, can they now?
